Weights and Measures

Systems of weights and measures change over time.
Old systems fade out of use; new systems become introduced.

Some systems are used only by specialists in a particular field.
Most traditional British measurements no longer exist for many people –

Avoirdupois weights, Apothecary dry and liquid, feet and yards.
As for a Scottish ell or a coombe, how could anyone survive without them?

How many square poles in a rood?

How big is a hectare?

What’s a quintal?

Where does an inch come from?

A cricket pitch is one chain in length – what’s that?

Do you know your scruples from your drachms?

Would you swap a florin for a guinea?

The distance from the equator to the North Pole via Paris is not 1 million metres. Metric measures are arbitary so why don’t we use nautical measure instead of metric?

Whatever happened to hogsheads and weys?

What sort of uneduated degenerate doesn’t know the value of a noble?

Is a myriolitre more useful than a truss?
